Board of Directors 2009

Helen Broughton
Helen Broughton works with Next Detroit Neighborhood Initiative (NDNI) as a Community Manager. She is a resident of East English Village, serves on the neighborhood association board and was formerly a member of the Steering Team for Detroit Synergy.

"Through my work and volunteer efforts, I have learned about the power of individual engagement and the need to build, within ourselves, an increasing capacity and willingness to assume responsibility and take action to create our vision for the city. I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Friends toward the revitalization of the Alger Theater."

Dennis Costello
Dennis has been affiliated with the Friends of the Alger Theater since the theater building was purchased in December 1986. He has held a number of positions in the organization and is currently serving as President of the “Friends”. Dennis has been employed as a Procurement / Contract Administrator with Macomb Community College for the past ten years and held business related positions in both the public and private sectors for the previous fifteen years. His interests lie in supporting both visual and performing arts and re-development of a community asset like the Alger for the cultural benefit of area residents and businesses alike.

Geoff Gowman
Mr. Gowman is the Founder and current Treasurer of the Friends of the Alger Theater. He was born and raised in Detroit when neighborhoods flourished and wholesome activities were plentiful. He worked twenty five plus years as a social worker in inner-city neighborhoods, witnessing the damaging effects of a marginal quality of life upon residents. Now retired, he wants to see his community thrive, with people of ALL ages experiencing the cultural enrichment of a restored Alger Theater.

Susan Polk
Susan Polk has been a resident of the east side of Detroit for the past 12 years; living in both  the Morningside and East English Village communities. She was elected to the Friends of the Alger Theater Board in December of 2007 and currently serves as Board Secretary. Mrs. Polk’s automotive background in quality and sales brings to FOTAT an analytical perspective through process management and experience in technical writing. Her dedication to the neighborhood and the City of Detroit can be shown in her participation in Angel Night events, Clean Sweep and patronage to local businesses.

Marc Tirikian
Marc Tirikian is an architect and a principal for WMSTUDIO, a small Detroit-based architectural practice focusing on residential and renovation work in the city. Prior to this, Marc worked in Chicago for Skidmore Owings and Merrill, where he worked on many international projects including the New NATO Headquarters Building in Brussels and the Burj Dubai Tower in the United Emirates. Marc also has experience in teaching, having taught as an Adjunct Faculty at the University of Detroit-Mercy and Eastern Michigan University programs in architectural design and the history of architecture. Marc is a graduate of the University of Michigan, obtaining a BS.Arch. degree in 1990 and an M.Arch degree in 1995.

Karlene Trump
Karlene initiated and organized a community outreach committee with the Alger Theater which plans and stages local events to raise money and increase community awareness and involvement. She has a long history in theater, her most recent an acting role with the Grosse Pointe Theater. Always looking for new challenges she exchanged her career in nursing for buying and rehabilitating older homes in the City of Detroit as well as recently opening a bakery and sandwich shop on East Warren Avenue.
